Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian police will grill an alleged serial killer Monday using a lie-detector to try to shed light on suspicions his parents helped him in a string of grisly murders, a spokesman said.
Murder suspect Verry Idham Henyaksyah, also known as Ryan, is accused of burying at least 10 of his victims including a toddler in the backyard of his parents' house in East Java province.
The dismembered remains of another alleged victim were found in a bag on the side of a road in Jakarta and police think there could be more bodies buried at the East Java family home.
"Through a lie-detector we're seeking evidence over the possible involvement of his parents," police spokesman Abubakar Nataprawira was quoted by AFP as saying.
He said Henyaksyah had repeatedly changed his story and the lie-detector could help investigators sort out his many contradictory statements.
"Investigators will guide the suspect over whether he did the crime by himself or whether other people helped him in killing and burying the victims," the spokesman said.
Police say the suspect, a 30-year-old Koran recital teacher, has confessed to killing at least four people including one who was his gay lover.
Spokesman Nataprawira said the parents also would be questioned Monday as investigators tried to discover how the bodies were buried in the yard without their knowledge and whether there were any more corpses hidden there.
"We're trying to reveal whether there are more victims we haven't discovered," he said.
The suspect's parents have been identified in the local media as Ahmad Sadikun, a farmer, and mother Siatun, a clothes vendor.
Their village house, set among rice paddies and sugarcane, has become a massive crime investigation scene since the first bodies were discovered there on July 22.
In an interview with Tempo magazine last week, Henyaksyah -- who is reportedly sharing a cell with an Islamist extremist -- said his family had done the killings out of disgust with his lifestyle.
"Actually, I didn't do the killing. My family killed them. They disapproved of my lifestyle. They killed every man who was close to me," he was quoted as saying.
Asked to explain, he said: "I can't talk now. I just want to protect them."
