Potential Earthquake and Tsunami in Indonesia

Indonesia has experienced devastating earthquakes and tsunami in Aceh and surrounding areas. Similar earthquake and tsunami that killed many people like the December 26, 2004 incident could happen again in Sumatra. And new Padang earthquake rocked last year, as was the crosshairs.

Thus the warning delivered seismologist team as reported by AFP news agency on Monday (18.1.2010). The warnings set forth in a letter to the journal Nature Geoscience.

The team is led by prominent scientist John McCloskey, a professor at the Research Institute of Environmental Science at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. McCloskey famous since the Sumatra earthquake prediction is fairly accurate in the year 2005.

It is said that the team, the danger comes from the buildup of pressure constant in the two last centuries in parts of the Sunda Trench, one of the most terrible earthquake zone in the world, which took place parallel to the coast of western Sumatra.

"The threat of an earthquake causes a massive tsunami with more power scale of 8.5 in the Mentawai patch .... There is not reduced potential for loss of life for Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004," it warned.

Not mentioned at any time of the incident. But clearly reminded of the dangers to Padang, a city with a population of 850 thousand inhabitants located in these risky areas.

"The threat to the event is clear and urgent need for action is very high," warned that seismological experts.

More than 220 thousand people died in the tsunami disaster December 26, 2004 when an earthquake measuring 9.3 on the Richter scale rocked the northern part of the Sunda trench.

In March 2005, McCloskey has warned that the earthquake which occurred on December 26, 2004 it has created major pressure on the part of the disability attached to the south. He said, the vibration in the region by force 8.5 earthquake on the Richter Scale with a capacity capable of creating a tsunami will occur and remind local governments to get ready.

McCloskey prediction proved correct in two weeks. On March 28, 2005, an earthquake with a strength 8.6 Richter scale hit the island of Simeulue and create a 3-meter-high tsunami.

Now the team McCloskey reminded the Indonesian government to take steps to prepare themselves against the risk of subsequent earthquakes in Padang after the devastating earthquake in Padang on September 30, 2009.

"It's important that the Indonesian government with the help of the international community and nongovernmental organizations, ensuring that they complete and relief efforts after the earthquake resistant construction of this earthquake, and work with the people of Padang to help them prepare for the next earthquake," added them.
