National police takes over Ryan case

The Jakarta Post. The National Police are taking over the East Java serial murder case after local police mistakenly put two innocent citizens behind bars for the murder of one of the 11 bodies found.

"You can ask the National Police spokesperson about it," said East Java Police chief Ir.Gen. Herman S Sumawiredja when asked about reasons for the investigation take over.

East Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Pudji Astuti said the National Police had the right to take over the case because it involves two police jurisdictions, East Java and Jakarta. Some of the victims were from Jakarta.

The East Java police so far have excavated 11 bodies from Very "Ryan" Idham Hennyansyah's backyard.

Last May, the Jombang District Court sentenced Imam Hambali and Devid Eko Priyanto to 17 years and 12 years in prison, respectively, for the murder of Asrori.

But a confession by Ryan for the murder -- a subsequent DNA test supported his account -- sparked a public outcry that police, prosecutors and judges had punished innocent people.
